EASTERN STARS IHC

LEARN TO PLAY ICE HOCKEY IN LONDON
You don't need to have played before. Eastern Stars IHC is a recreational ice hockey club for adults (18+) at Lee Valley Ice Centre in North London, and every season we bring in players who are putting on hockey skates for the first time. Our coached sessions are built for exactly that.
Can I join if I've never played?
Yes. If you can skate forwards and stop, you can start. If you're still learning to skate, book a few public skating or learn-to-skate sessions at Lee Valley first, then come to a coached session.
Which session should I start with?
Coached sessions – alternate Sundays at 21:00 and Friday skills sessions at 21:30 – are the right place to begin. A qualified coach runs drills on skating, passing and positioning before any game play. All-level scrimmages are the next step once you're comfortable. Dates are on Spond.
What kit do I need?
Full ice hockey kit is required for every session: helmet with cage or visor, neck guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, padded shorts, shin pads, hockey skates and a stick, plus a mouthguard. A full starter set costs less than most people expect, and our coaches will tell you what to buy and what to avoid. Ask before you spend.
What does it cost?
Sessions are £22 each, booked and paid on Spond before you come. No joining fee for your first sessions. Season ticket options with discounts are available once you're a regular.
Where and when?
Lee Valley Ice Centre, Lea Bridge Road, London E10 7QL. Free parking for four hours (register your plate at the touch screens inside). Sessions run on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday evenings; the exact dates and invites are on Spond.
How do I book my first session?
1. Join our Spond group – it's the club's sign-up and payment app.
2. Pick a coached session and sign up.
3. Arrive an hour before ice time, say hello to team management at the rink, and we'll get you on the ice and into the club WhatsApp group.
Who plays with Eastern Stars?
Adults of every level and background, from first-timers to former league players, men and women. The club was founded in London in 2000 and has played at Lee Valley ever since. Beginners train with the development group; once you're ready, there are development-level home and away games.
